It’s easy to jump into testing without a strong sense of the real issue, especially when signals point in multiple directions. This creates wasted dev cycles, testing fatigue, and missed upside.

This week’s email outlines a more structured approach to interpreting friction, identifying root causes, and deciding what to test first, whether you're working with qualitative interviews, heatmaps, or session recordings.

How to Prioritize Tests When CRO Signals Conflict

When conversion performance drops or stagnates, it helps to categorize the problem. Most issues fall into one of three buckets: copy, UX flow, or targeting mismatch.

Here’s how to identify which one you're dealing with:

  1. Session recordings:

If users stay on the page and scroll but do not click, they’re either confused or can’t find the information they need. This is usually a copy clarity issue.

  1. Page switching behavior:

If users are bouncing between product pages and the cart, or toggling between product and category views, they're likely unsure if the product is right for them.

  • If they're engaging with FAQs or detailed feature descriptions, they’re looking for information that hasn't surfaced clearly.

  • If they spend time in the image carousel or swipe through thumbnails, it's likely a visual presentation issue.

  1. Cart or checkout drop-off:

Users abandoning at this stage often have concerns about pricing, shipping costs, or payment terms. These are related to perceived value or financial friction, not layout or copy.

  1. High bounce from specific channels:

This usually points to a mismatch between the ad or email and the landing page. If users don’t see continuity in message or visual context, trust drops, and so does conversion.

Once you've pinpointed the problem type, take action accordingly:

  • Copy gaps: Use heatmaps to find the most-clicked FAQ questions. Pull the most relevant ones into the main features list near the buy box while keeping them in the FAQ.

  • Visual gaps: If a specific image consistently leads to conversions, move it higher in the carousel and also repeat it lower on the PDP.

  • Channel mismatch: Check performance by traffic source. If bounce and scroll data from paid ads or email show poor engagement, fix messaging alignment at the top of the funnel.

This approach avoids surface-level testing and helps you move straight to the underlying cause.

Win of the Week: When Bounce Rate Misleads and Revenue Tells the Truth

In our recent test, “Returning Visitor Homepage V2”, we set out to improve the experience specifically for returning users. Several updates were made to better guide visitors into deeper engagement and ultimately improve conversion behavior.

Key changes included:

  • A full-width, shorter hero image to reduce visual overwhelm

  • Overlay copy on the hero to provide immediate context and action

  • A second section is intentionally positioned to peek above the fold and encourage scrolling

At first glance, one of the primary metrics (bounce rate) increased by 7.63%. For many teams, this would signal a failed test, but that number lacked context.

When we looked deeper, we saw:

  • +3.5% increase in time on page

  • +6.6% increase in cart adds

  • +5.4% lift in total revenue

The update also delivered strong gains across key traffic sources:

  • Organic search transactions rose by 18.7%

  • Branded paid search transactions increased by 7.7%

In this case, bounce rate moved in the “wrong” direction, but more meaningful indicators, engagement, add-to-cart behavior, and conversion, improved. We would have missed a revenue-positive outcome if we stopped at bounce rate.

This test reinforced a key principle: prioritize outcome metrics over surface-level engagement. Let user behavior guide you, but always tie it back to business impact.

How to Weigh Conflicting Signals When Friction Points Compete

When two friction points emerge simultaneously, like a slow page load and unclear offer positioning, it’s important to assess which one has a higher chance of impacting conversion and revenue.

The process starts by comparing signal strength and signal source. Ask:

  • Are we looking at one power user’s feedback versus a pattern seen in 50 percent of session recordings?

  • Is this a minor heat map anomaly or a repeated theme that showed up across 10 customer interviews?

Volume matters. 

If both signals seem equally strong, lean toward qualitative data. Interviews give you access to context and intent. You can dig into the why behind someone’s confusion or hesitation. That’s often more valuable than interpreting behavior from a distance.

Quantitative data like scrolls or clicks helps show what happened. But without context, you’re inferring causality when it could be correlation. 

That’s why qualitative signals often take priority when the volume is close.

There are a few exceptions:

  • It carries less weight if the qualitative data came from an unreliable source, like a vague survey written by someone else or poorly framed customer service notes. Always consider how the data was collected.

  • If the feedback itself is vague, like “the design feels off,” it needs to align with behavioral data before you act on it.

  • If it’s specific, like “I couldn’t find how long shipping takes,” and you see users hovering around FAQ or policy sections in recordings, that’s a high-confidence signal worth acting on quickly.

The key is to balance directionality, depth, and potential upside. The clearer and more specific the feedback, the less validation it needs before moving into a test.
